Hair Ideas: a Gorgeous Messy Look From Milan Fashion Week Fall 2011

The hairstyles shown in Milan this past Fashion Week? A lot of ponytails (of both the sleek and messy variety), some chignons and one kooky conehead—but really, there was only one look that totally and completely blew us away.

  • It was the tousled look at Marni:

Created by hairstylist Paul Hanlon, the hair was part romantic, part edgy, and stood out against the monotony of severe and simple styles from the rest of the week. "We wanted to make the hair look like it was three days old, as if the models had slept in it," Hanlon explained backstage. "There was no particular reference we were given, just to make the models look very cool and modern—like an everyday girl on the street." With volume at the crown à la Brigitte Bardot, and disheveled texture reminiscent of Kate Moss in the '90s, Hanlon summed up the finished product as "easy, natural, grungy, and a bit dry and dirty."

  • Messy  texture isn't new—we've seen it at many shows over the past several seasons—but with a bit of body, a soft swoop of hair across the forehead, and a few defined pieces throughout, it's sexy and tough, but completely wearable at the same time. Who would've thought that '60s bombshell mixed with '90s grunge would look so good together?

  • Getting the look by following Hanlon's steps is fairly simple
    1. On the day of the show, the early morning time slot meant that all the models arrived backstage with clean hair. To give it that disheveled texture, he started by drenching the hair in mousse and spritzing it with TIGI Bed Head Superstar Queen for a Day Thickening Spray from root to tip, scrunching the hair with his fingers as he blow-dried.
    2. He made deep side parts, and draped the front section of hair across the forehead and pinned it at the right temple with a single bobby pin.
    3. Then, with a one-inch curling iron, Hanlon curled the entire head in one-inch sections, except for the hair at the forehead and crown, which he left flat.
    4. The finishing touch was a little TIGI Rockaholic Groupie Texturizing Spray Pomade sprayed through the ends to give them that slightly dirty, lanky quality.
